It’s hard to believe but this hamlet comprised 18 houses and 30 inhabitants back in the 18th century. Today, alas, there are but 4 or 5 houses left standing. By dint of vision and hard work these have been renovated and refurbished to create a bijou hamlet of old stone buildings with two gites, the owners’ house and a fine indoor pool. Here’s a run-down on the various buildings:
The main house. This old stone-built mansion dating back to 1797 is on three floors: the lower floor is given over to cellars, workshops and technical equipment. The owners live on the upper two floors with a vast living/dining area with wood-burner, kitchen and covered balcony area. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and bathroom.
Gite 1: Another three-storey building which used to be stables. Ground floor given over to water heaters (solar-water heating panels on roof), freezer, washing and drying machines. On the first floor is the sauna and the spacious bathroom and kitchen. On the next floor are two big rooms: one used as a bedroom and the other as a lounge.
Gite 2 is in a separate, independent stone-built house with a neat little balcony on the second floor and a big terrace out front. There are two bedrooms, a state-of-the-art bathroom as well as a fully equipped kitchen. .
The pool is housed in a magnificent vaulted barn known as the Cathedral. Not only is the pool heated but the cathedral also contains a bar, changing area and showers.
The land around the hamlet is mostly wooded but there are vegetable patches and flower gardens, climbing kiwi plants, camelias and open spaces where visitors and hosts alike can find a shady corner.
As hamlets go this one is certainly more habitable and ‘finished’ than many others. A lot of (quality) work has gone into converting old stone barns and stables into comfortable dwellings. The idea of turning the barn into an indoor pool and bar area was pure genius: it is now the natural centre of the hamlet. For buyers with itchy fingers there is still one ruin to be converted into accommodation and numerous cellars and workshops to tweak into different uses. But for most people, this hamlet is the finished product, ready to welcome new owners into their own little private world, far from the madding crowd … and with two gites to ensure a steady if unspectacular income stream.
